Associated Press Report:
Robert Castello literally wears his Southern pride. The visor, suspenders and ring he donned Thursday were all emblazoned with the familiar design of the rebel battle flag.
Castello, whose Dixie General Store sells Confederate-themed hats, shirts, stickers and signs in rural eastern Alabama, said he doesn’t have any use for overtly racist groups like the Klan.
“When I was growing up it was like a badge of honor to be proud of your Southern heritage. It was taught and it was part of who you were,” said Castello, 58. “To see it denigrated down to the point of Nazis is disgusting.”
So what is the Southern heritage? Try Googling that question and you find the Confederate flag and little else. There is some writing about food and music but very little on those subjects. Those discussions would make sense.
Country music (frequently referred to as just country) is a musical genre that originated in the Southern United States in the 1920s.[1] It takes its roots from genres such as folk music (especially Appalachian folk music) and blues. This has nothing to do with the Civil War.
A traditional Southern meal is pan-fried chicken, field peas (such as black-eyed peas), greens (such as collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, or poke salad), mashed potatoes, cornbread or corn pone, sweet tea, and dessert—typically a pie (sweet potato, chess, shoofly, pecan, and peach are the most common), or a cobbler (peach, blackberry, sometimes apple in Kentucky or Appalachia). This also has nothing to do with the Civil War.
If the southern states still want a country of their own. Why not? Why should the United States keep some states from seceding from the union? Holding them against their will really makes no good sense.
