My car broke down on Highway 5 as I was driving north from Los Angeles to Berkley. There was no cell service. I started to walk back to the rest stop that was somewhere between 10 and 20 miles away. A farmer picked me up and took me to his home so that I could call the Auto Club. He is married and has a daughter.
With two or more hours to kill I looked into my backpack for a book to read. An hour later one of the most beautiful girls I had ever seen walked into the sitting room. She was a long haired blonde with a stunning body. I was too dumfounded. The gray t-shirt she was wearing clung to her body and showed off her big boobs and slender waist. I could not help but stare. She didn’t seem to notice my staring.
“Ha, Ahm Josie. Paw says your cah broke down. Ah hope it’s not too serious. Would you lak to have lunch with me?”
In a nervous stutter I responded saying, “Yes. That would be very nice.”
Josie motions to me, “Come on into the kitchen.”
As I sit down at the table Josie puts the sandwich and a bottle of Coke in front of me.
Josie starts the conversation. “So where ah y’all from an where an you goin?”
“I’m from the San Fernando Valley and I am going to UC Berkley. I am majoring in marketing. What’s it like living on a farm?”
“Oh, we grow the crops. Whatever Paw says will make the most money and then we sell them. It’s not easy but we are luckier than most people. Paw owns hundreds of acres.”
“So you help with planting or picking or what?”
“Ye-yes. Ah do what ah can to help.”
My cell phone rings. It is the Auto Club calling to say they will be at the car in two hours. The dispatcher says the tow truck driver will call about 15 minutes before he arrives.
I explained the call to Josie.
Josie, “Would you lak to see the bahn and the otha things out back?”
“Sure. Why not? It looks like I have the time.”
We walked out the back door and towards the barn. I follow Josie behind the barn.
“We use ha-vesting machines that pick most of our crops. We need help to run the machines, load trucks and other things that machines can’t do. The machines can havest strawberries, beans and asparagus. It’s also good for plantin, weedin.”
“Do you own all of that equipment?”
“Some is rented and some we own. We rent the machines from the co-op.”
I then asked how the workers are paid. Josie responded saying something I did not expect. “Well we have a loyal group that works for Paw but the pay isn’t too good. I help by givin them a poke or two.”
My response was, “Hu.” Then “What?” Then after some thought “Oh.”
I remained quiet. After a minute Josie says, “It’s OK. Don’t be shocked. Ah lak doin it. It feels good. It’s all for fun. Ma big boobs attract lots a attention.” Another moment of silence. “If you want I will let you give me a poke or two. All the guys love it. So ah am sure you will too.”
