Which minority will be next?

Infamously ill-tempered Fox News co-host and former Democratic strategist, Bob Beckel, suggested this past Monday that the U.S. stop accepting foreign Muslim students until the ones already here have been thoroughly vetted.

Bob Beckel “The hatred for the United   States runs deep,” Beckel said during a broader discussion on the Boston Bombings.  Perhaps we should block entry of all Muslims into this country until those already here, both permanent residents and visiting Muslims, have been thoroughly vetted.

Look, America is under siege.  Radical Muslims have sworn to attack and destroy the United States.  Unless Muslims can prove that they are not part of a radical group we must assume that they are.  I am merely following Beckel’s reasoning.

The United States locked up 120,000 Japanese Americans during World War II.  There were no trials.  The decision was based upon the fear that any one of those people could be working for their native land.

Apparently we have not changed.  Run for the exits!  Fear has overtaken logic and reason.  The rights defined in the constitution are about to be ignored.

Which minority will be next?

The Reason to Legalize Illegal Aliens

The vast majority of illegal aliens are poorly educated.  They compete for many of the jobs held by poorly educated and limited capability Americans.  That drives down the labor rates for the poorest Americans.

I have read the summary of the new immigration law being proposed in the Senate.  There are so many trip wires in the proposed law it does not seem likely that this bill will ever become law.  If it does, those entering the country illegally won’t receive “Registered Provision Immigrant (RPI) legal status” for at least five years and probably even longer.

The proposed law does nothing to prevent aliens who are bent on harming America from becoming legal residence and ultimately citizens.

19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the surviving brother in the Boston bombing became a citizen just last year.  Having gone to American schools he had learned enough to earn his citizenship.

Then there is Alejandrino Honorato who came to the United   States in the early 1980s.  He obtained amnesty thanks to the Reagan amnesty plan.  He has a business that employs 60 people and that is good.  However, he still does not speak English well enough to converse with a reporter from Businessweek.  His story was told in the March 18-24 edition of that magazine.  How did he obtain his citizenship without being able to speak our language?

What do these two people have in common?  Neither really wanted to become Americans.

The Republicans want to compromise with the Democrats on legalization and citizenship of millions of immigrants because they are hoping to garner their votes in future elections.  This has nothing to do with “doing the right thing.”

Democracy is on Decline in America

Rural America vs. Sensible Gun Control

Multiple opinion polls have shown that more than 80% of Americans support expanded background checks to make it more difficult for criminals and the mentally ill to obtain guns. Senators Joe Manchin (Democrat from West Virginia) and Pat Toomey (Republican from Pennsylvania) struck a bi-partisan deal to accomplish this objective.  The proposal failed 54 to 46.  You see passing anything in the Senate requires 60 votes of the 100 in that body.

It is accurate to say that those living in rural areas are more likely to need a weapon for protection.  Even those people in rural areas must worry about criminals and the mentally ill.  So why would they oppose an expansion of a regulation that already exists to gun shows?

The NRA and other pro-gun groups have won another round for no limits on gun ownership.  Democracy has lost.  This nation is less safe. This nation is less united.

People Kill People – Not Guns

Student charged in Va. mall shootings; 2 wounded; Gunman fires at father, 6-year-old son in Costa Mesa; What do these two incidents have in common?  The answer: people killing people.  The NRA and other gun rights advocates have told us repeatedly that “guns don’t kill people, people kill people.”

If we agree with those rights groups then the issue is dangerous people.  Some of those people are felons who are not allowed own guns and some of those people are mentally imbalanced in some way that should result in them being denied the right to own a weapon.

Why would reasonable mentally competent people want to see guns fall into the hands of felons or the mentally incompetent?

A partial solution to this problem is background checks on all gun buyers.  That kind of law would not have stopped Adam Lanza in Newtown, Connecticut.  It might have stopped the killing in Aurora, Colorado and Tucson, Arizona.

Even in nations with stricter gun regulations killing does happen.  Shouldn’t our laws work to prevent those horrible tragedies?

I am asking for sensible regulation that will keep weapons out of the hands of dangerous people.

Equality is something for Everyone!

Some of the people in my family are devoutly religious.  None are in my immediate family.  I am quite certain that they believe marriage is between a man and a woman.  They believe it cannot be any other way.  Homosexuality is, in their view, something to be hidden and something to be ashamed of.  It must have been VERY difficult for Senator Rob Portman, who had taken a strong stand against gay marriage to learn that his 21 year old son is gay.

I personally find sexual relations between two people of the same sex to be revolting.  Especially sex between two men.  There was nothing funny about “I Love You Phillip Morris” starring Jim Carrey.  To me it was horrifying.

Despite my feelings, I recognize that there are people in this world who are attracted to others of the same sex.  They have the right to live their lives as happily as does the rest of society.  Homosexual marriages will not impact my marriage in any way.  The religious may believe that homosexual marriage will demean the basic principles of marriage.  Those that have that belief probably also find all deviations from orthodox religion as unacceptable behavior too.

No one makes you associate with those you find an anathema to your views or beliefs.  You are not required to associate with people of another religion, race, political party, etc. that you consider unacceptable.

Modern Family” really is a profile on the early 21st century as “The Jeffersons” were in the last part of the 20th century.

I have no idea how the Supreme Court will rule on California’s Proposition 8 or DOMA.  I would recommend the justices re-read the American Declaration of Independence and the preamble to the Constitution.

Equality is something for Everyone!  No law should limit that right!

The Playbook

“keep secret its legal justification for killing without a trial”

Barack  Obama  is  the  enhanced  George  W.  Bush!

Newsweek’s latest edition (February 1, 2013) on iPad, Android, and PC only, offers an article that describes the protocol for the targeted killings conducted by drones.  According to this article the U.S. administration has been developing “explicit rules and procedures for when lethal force is justified.”  Justification includes the legal right to conduct such killings of bad guys even if they are American citizens.  This set of rules is referred to as “the playbook.”  Newsweek reports that the playbook has evolved from the targeted killings that have been conducted in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Yemen.  Playbook killings could be conducted, according to Newsweek, wherever the United States detected terrorists that are a threat to the American homeland.  The playbook goes into detail about who the targeted individuals might be and does exclude drivers, cooks and others who are part of a support staff within a terrorist group.  Thus Somalia, Mali, or any other place on Earth could be part of the playbook’s rules and procedures.

Not addressed in the Newsweek article is the legal justification for killing Americans who appear to be traitors, such as Anwar al-Awlaki, without a trial.  The administration, I believe is skating on thin ice.  The Huffington Post reported January 2, 2013 “The Obama administration will be able to keep secret its legal justification for killing without a trial an American suspected of joining al Qaeda after a federal judge on Wednesday dismissed most of a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and The New York Times. Both the ACLU and The New York Times plan to appeal the decision.”

WowIf the government can keep the justification secret then what else can the government do to its own citizens? al-Awlaki was clearly a traitor to the United States but killing him without due process is a stretch.

Is it any wonder that there are people in the United States who want to have all weapons at their disposal?

Retired Cardinal Roger Mahony Stripped of His Duties

Roger Mahony

This monster makes me ill.  I show his photo only so there is no mistake who this is about.

For reasons that are utterly senseless there is no statute of limitations for traffic violations but there is a statute of limitations for those who molest children and the people who protect the molesters.

Retired Cardinal Roger Mahony’s  successor, Archbishop Jose Gomez, has stripped Mahony of all his duties. The Archbishop said, “The behavior described in these files is terribly sad and evil. There is no excuse,no explaining
away what happened to these children.”

February 1, 2013:  OOPS!  Wrong again!  Mahony is still considered a priest in good standing according to a local newspaper.  Someone asked if he is still a Cardinal wouldn’t he still participate in selecting the next pope?  Catholics are the victims.

Senator Dianne Feinstein’s Weapons Ban Legislation

Dianne Feinstein & assault weapons

This proposed law may never be passed by Congress but Senator Dianne Feinstein has nothing to lose and everything to gain.  If passed, this legislation will help reduce the homicide rates in our nation.

It has been reported that the Administration is focusing on high-capacity magazines because they are the real issue and it is believed that there can be agreement on that issue.

Assault Weapons Ban of 2013

The legislation bans the sale, transfer, manufacturing and importation of:

1. All semiautomatic rifles that can accept a detachable magazine and have at least one military feature: pistol grip; forward grip; folding, telescoping, or detachable stock; grenade launcher or rocket launcher; barrel shroud; or threaded barrel.

2. All semiautomatic pistols that can accept a detachable magazine and have at least one military feature: threaded barrel; second pistol grip; barrel shroud; capacity to accept a detachable magazine at some location outside of the pistol grip; or semiautomatic version of an automatic firearm.

3. All semiautomatic rifles and handguns that have a fixed magazine with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.

4. All semiautomatic shotguns that have a folding, telescoping, or detachable stock; pistol grip; fixed magazine with the capacity to accept more than 5 rounds; ability to accept a detachable magazine; forward grip; grenade launcher or rocket launcher; or shotgun with a revolving cylinder.

5. All ammunition feeding devices (magazines, strips, and drums) capable of accepting more than 10 rounds.

6. 157 specifically-named firearms (listed at the end of this document).

The legislation excludes the following weapons from the bill:

a. Any weapon that is lawfully possessed at the date of the bill’s enactment;

b. Any firearm manually operated by a bolt, pump, lever or slide action;

c. Assault weapons used by military, law enforcement, and retired law enforcement; and

d. Antique weapons.

The legislation protects hunting and sporting firearms:

i. The bill excludes 2,258 legitimate hunting and sporting rifles and shotguns by specific make and model.

The legislation strengthens the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban and state bans by:

ii. Moving from a 2-characteristic test to a 1-characteristic test.

The bill also makes the ban harder to evade by eliminating the easy-to-remove bayonet mounts and flash suppressors from the characteristics test.

iii. Banning dangerous aftermarket modifications and workarounds.

iv. Bump or slide fire stocks, which are modified stocks that enable semi-automatic weapons to fire at rates similar to fully automatic machine guns.

v. So-called “bullet buttons” that allow the rapid replacement of ammunition magazines, frequently used as a workaround to prohibitions on detachable magazines.

vi. Thumbhole stocks, a type of stock that was created as a workaround to avoid prohibitions on pistol grips.

vii. Adding a ban on the importation of assault weapons and large-capacity magazines.

viii. Eliminating the 10-year sunset that allowed the original federal ban to expire.

The legislation addresses the millions of assault weapons and large-capacity magazines currently in existence by:

i. Requiring a background check on all sales or transfers of a grandfathered assault weapon.

ii. This background check can be run through the FBI or, if a state chooses, initiated with a state agency, as with the existing background check system.

iii. Prohibiting the sale or transfer of large-capacity ammunition feeding devices lawfully possessed on the date of enactment of the bill.

iv. Allowing states and localities to use federal Byrne JAG grant funds to conduct a voluntary buy-back program for grandfathered assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition feeding devices.

v. Imposing a safe storage requirement for grandfathered firearms, to keep them away from prohibited persons.

vi. Requiring that assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition feeding devices manufactured after the date of the bill’s enactment be engraved with the serial number and date of manufacture of the weapon.

Inauguration Day 2013

  Inauguration Day 2013

President Barack Obama offered an inaugural speech calling for unification of purpose regardless of political party.  This is the sort of speech we all expect in an inaugural presentation.  Sadly political divisions in the nation are more like chasms.  He knows that there are major differences between the political parties and other groups in the country.  Listen to Bill O’Reilly or Sean Hannity and there is affirmation of the split between the political parties.

Thus he tried to put the best face on a country that is seriously broken by geographic, religious, and racial disagreements.  Never mind the breach between rich and poor or the labor unions battling the employers.  When state leaders voice intentions to nullify or just plain ignore federal law and many who voice desires to succeed from the union, the president’s job will be about holding the nation together.

This may seem as all too negative.  The president’s speech about one purpose was an “A” effort towards healing our differences.
