Leonard Nimoy, ‘Star Trek’s’ Spock, dead at 83, Was From Another Society Not Another World

Leonard Nimoy - Mr. Spock

Leonard Nimoy was from another world in Star Trek and in real life. His captain (William Shatner) on Star Trek is also from that other world/society. You see both are Jewish.  Nimoy’s famous salute was a gesture he saw given at an orthodox synagogue when he was a boy.

In the story Mr. Spoke was a half human and half Vulcan. His pointed ears immediately differentiated him from every human. I have heard that there are places in this world where people believe that Jews also have pointed ears and are bred from the devil. The parable couldn’t be more obvious to me.

First understand that the total number of Jews in the entire world is about 13 million people. By any measure that would define us as a group that might soon no longer exist in another hundred years. Six million were killed by the Nazis before and during World War 2.

Jews are different from the rest of the world’s peoples. Perhaps that is the reason they are hated almost everywhere. Why are they hated? They, as a group, are smarter and more creative than any group you can define.

Of course you are asking for proof. Here it is.

Bob Simon of 60 Minutes was a Jew. He died in a car crash just two weeks ago. He was a Fulbright scholar.

Alan Greenspan, the much respected former Chairman of the Federal Reserve of the United States from 1987 to 2006.

– Three current members of the United States Supreme Court are Jews.

Henry Kissinger, Richard Nixon’s famous Secretary of State.

Jonas Edward Salk was an American medical researcher and virologist. He discovered and developed the first successful inactivated polio vaccine.

Richard Rodgers (1902–1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (1895–1960) were one of the most prolific teams that brought numerous musicals to Broadway and the world. Carousel – ‎South Pacific – ‎Flower Drum Song – Oklahoma were all part of their creativity.

Elsewhere in this blog is a more thorough list of famous Jews posted by David Bancroft. The article contends that it is all about education. I am sure you get the point. So is there a Jew gene? Genetic studies of Jewish origins is a topic in Wikipedia.

I personally am a marginal Jew. Both of my parents were brilliant in school and received scholarships and honors. I flunked Algebra 1 and barely passed Spanish 1. So you see there are no guarantees in life even for Jews.

High Fashion Comes to Los Angeles

Actually there are currently 24 Louis Vuitton stores in California.

The “Louis Vuitton Series 2 — Past, Present and Future” exhibition is in Los Angeles from Feb. 6-22. The event showcases a “untraditional interpretation” of Louis Vuitton‘s spring 2015 womenswear collection, according to WWD.  The exhibition is in a reconditioned building in what is called the new gallery center of Hollywood.  There was no cost to see the exhibit.  So my wife and I drove down to see the event.  We parked on Fountain Avenue just a few blocks south of Sunset Boulevard.  It was just two short blocks to the display.

We found what I call the reasoning behind fashion.  It’ all about illusion.  Isn’t that what makeup, and apparel, and how you walk and talk are really all about?  We entered into a dark hall that opened into a mirrored hall that reminded me of a “fun house.”  there were no distortion mirrors but the walls were covered with mirrors from floor to ceiling.  I could not tell whether I was walking into a mirror or down the hall. Then a short well light corridor lead to a second mirrored hall.  The mirrors not only display my likeness but also displayed models on a runway.  Beyond this startling part of the exhibit were room showing how their goods are made, a sample backstage room, and a display of their finest shoes, purses(bags), and jewelry.

It’s the Druggist

Upon arriving home, a husband was met at the door by his sobbing wife.
Tearfully she explained, “It’s the druggist. He insulted me terribly
this morning on the phone. I had to call multiple times before he
would even answer the phone.”

Immediately, the husband drove downtown to confront the druggist and
demand an apology.

Before he could say more than a word or two, the druggist told him,
“Now, just a minute, listen to my side of it. This morning the alarm
failed to go off, so I was late getting up. I went without
breakfast and hurried out to the car, just to realize that I’d locked the house
with both house and car keys inside and had to break a window to get
my keys.

“Then, driving a little too fast, I got a speeding ticket. Later,
when I was about three blocks from the store, I had a flat tire.”

“When I finally got to the store a bunch of people were waiting for me
to open up. I got the store opened and started waiting on these
people, all the time the darn phone was ringing off the hook.”

He continued, “Then I had to break a roll of nickels against the cash
register drawer to make change, and they spilled all over the floor.
I had to get down on my hands and knees to pick up the nickels and the
phone was still ringing.

When I came up I cracked my head on the open cash drawer, which made
me stagger back against a showcase with a bunch of perfume bottles on
it. Half of them hit the floor and broke.”

“Meanwhile, the phone is still ringing with no let up, and I finally
got back to answer it. It was your wife. She wanted to know how to
use a Rectal thermometer.

And believe me mister, as God is my witness, all I did was tell her.”

Freedom of Speech and other Western Freedoms

Freedom of the press means my right to post and print some things that others may find offensive.  Similarly I too may find what others post and print offensive. The Ku Kluz Klan marching through Skokie, Illinois carrying anti-Semitic banners was offensive to that Jewish neighborhood.  Still, it is freedom of speech.

Jeremy Renner is reminding people that his cheeky one-liner (at the Golden Globes) about Jennifer Lopez’s “globes” on Sunday was only a joke.  Jennifer was obviously showing off.

Bad Parrot

A young man named John received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary.

Every word out of the bird’s mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity. John tried and tried to change the bird’s attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to ‘clean up’ the bird’s vocabulary.

Finally, John was fed up, and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. John shook the parrot, and the parrot got angrier and even more rude. John, in desperation, threw up his hands, grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer.

For a few minutes, the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed. Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute.

Fearing that he’d hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the door to the freezer. The parrot calmly stepped out onto John’s outstretched arms and said, “I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I’m sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions, and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behavior.”

John was stunned at the change in the bird’s attitude.

As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, the bird spoke-up, very softly, “May I ask what the turkey did?”

Victoria’s Secret ‘Perfect Body’ ads draw criticism

What does “The Perfect ‘Body” look like? If you believed Victoria’s Secret’s newest ad campaign, it resembles a tall, busty and very slender 20-something model, gorgeous enough to walk down a New York catwalk in nothing but her skivvies.

Personally, I like looking at pretty young women in their underwear.

The ads with the tagline “The Perfect ‘Body,’” which appear in U.K. stores and on the American website, don’t sit well with many who say the company is promoting unhealthy body image standards for women, as well as once again using thin models to set the standard of what a beautiful body looks like or should look like.

To come to the company’s defense, the slogan is a play on words for their bra line in their “Body” collection (this is why the word is in quotes in the tagline), but it doesn’t make this ad gone very wrong – a right.

It’s true that Victoria’s Secret shows the same thin models in their TV ads, during their highly anticipated annual fashion show and really, everywhere the brand has a presence – so why the uproar now?

It may be that in those instances, this notion of body perfection is only implied, yet in the ads, it’s in our faces. The writing is on the wall, literally.

While the majority of social media users have expressed their disappointment a few have come to the lingerie brand’s defense.

Warren Buffett on Clinton 2016: ‘Hillary is going to win’

As reported on Fortune.com, Warren Buffet appearing at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit predicted that Hillary Clinton will not only run for president but that she will win.  He said he would bet on it.

I would bet that the GOP will disagree with a Clinton win.  But isn’t it entertaining.
