The Great Society

President Lyndon Johnson’s campaign rally cry was all about creating The Great Society. Within days of his ascendancy to office he told us about his “War on Poverty.” The census bureau says in 2012, the official poverty rate was 15.0 percent. There were 46.5 million people in poverty.

I have stopped going to the Town Hall meetings sponsored by my congressman. For him they are a great way of showing his constituency that he is really interested in the people he represents. I was at his last meeting that was held at the local high school. I learned nothing. Pocket sized booklets of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were free for the taking. These gimmicks have enabled him to be re-elected eight times.
John_HancockThe Declaration of Independence was the creation of the wealthy in 1776. The most famous signatory is John Hancock. Hancock was one of the wealthiest men in the Thirteen Colonies, having inherited a profitable mercantile business from his uncle. http://www.ushistory.org/declaration/signers/. It is the wealthy that made this country grow and succeed.

However it is the middle class that made this country an inspiration for the rest of the world. Thus far the 21st century has brought about that groups decline in significant numbers. If this country is to continue to be a beacon the government must take all action necessary to ensure those in the middle continue to thrive. As of this date the current congress has failed to “insure domestic Tranquility” and “promote the general Welfare” as directed in the preamble to the Constitution.

Recent evidence of a lack of effort to “promote the general Welfare” is the absence of legislation that would protect jobs and encourage hiring. Who cares? Not the mostly well-to-do members of Congress. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 25% in 2013.  And you thought the representatives were representing you. They are not! They represent their best interests. That would be the money men who contribute to re-election campaigns.

The unemployment rate dropped to 6.7% in December. Sounds good. It’s all about smoke and mirrors. The BLS wrote in its latest report in January wrote, “The number of unemployed persons declined by 490,000 to 10.4 million,” but the bureau reported that only 74,000 jobs had been created. How can this be? Simple. More people stopped looking for work and are no longer counted as unemployed. The unemployment rate is a feel good number that does not tell us the real employment situation.

This situation reminds me of George Orwell’s 1984. Lies and double talk. Two and Two could be Five. Especially if the government says so. Town Hall meetings and the unemployment rate are two of the many government efforts to make you believe that our elected representatives are making America a great success story.

Pointing Finger Don’t you believe it!

It takes more than the ballot box to change a 317 million population nation. Demonstrations and marches are needed. How many will be willing to participate? Not enough to make the changes. And so we march along as the peasants (the federal government hates that word) doing the bidding of our masters.

Rising riches: 1 in 5 in US reaches affluence

Despite all the tears shed over the income gap in the United States this article is a reason for hope.  Maybe you won’t become part of the 20% earning $250,000 or more but you just might find a path to recovery.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Fully 20 percent of U.S. adults become rich for parts of their lives, wielding extensive influence over America’s economy and politics, according to new survey data.

These “new rich,” made up largely of older professionals, working married couples and more educated singles, are becoming politically influential, and economists say their capacity to spend is key to the U.S. economic recovery. But their rise is also a sign of the nation’s continuing economic polarization.

Disneyland Is Not the Happiest Place on Earth

This all started when AARP had an article in their magazine about happiness.  They referred me to the World Database of Happiness. They have sponsored polls since 2005 and found that Denmark is the happiest place on earth.

According to polls taken from 2005 to 2011, these were the happiest countries:

  1. Denmark
  2. Finland
  3. Norway
  4. Netherlands
  5. Canada
  6. Switzerland
  7. Sweden
  8. New Zealand
  9. Australia
  10. Ireland

The United States ranks 11th, just after Ireland. The unhappiest country is Togo.  It’s not hard to notice that the unhappiest countries are also some of the poorest. The four happiest countries have incomes that are 40 times higher than the four unhappiest countries, the report said. People can also expect to live 28 years longer in the happiest nations.  Apparently cold weather is not a factor in determining happiness.

The questions seem to revolve around how you feel. An example are these questions:

“On the whole how satisfied are you with the life you lead?”

4 very satisfied

3 fairly satisfied

2 not very satisfied

1 not at all satisfied

“During the past few weeks, did you ever feel ….?” (yes/no)

A. Particularly exited or interested in something?

B. So restless that you couldn’t sit long in a chair?

C. Proud because someone complimented you on something you had done?

D. Very lonely or remote from other people?

E. Pleased about having accomplished something?

F. Bored?

G. On top of the world?

H. Depressed or very unhappy?

I. That things were going your way?

J. Upset because someone criticized you?

Answer options and scoring:

Yes = 1 No = 0

Twenty six categories or criteria entered into the conclusions.  Yes, environment and climate are part of the evaluations.

Are the conclusions biased in favor of European nations?  Perhaps.

Security Protection That makes You Feel Good

This qualifies as beyond stupid.  However, we do want everyone to believe the lives of our loved ones are being protected.

In the name of security the United States federal government and many local agencies are taking extraordinary measures to protect the public from terrorists and the mentally disturbed.

The latest coming to my attention is the city of Los Angeles Police Department  (LAPD) efforts to reassure the parents of school children in elementary and middle schools.  Starting this week the children are on vacation for the Christmas and New Year Holiday period.  It is a three week vacation.  While the children are at home the LAPD is developing a plan to have police officers visit every school every week day.  There will not be a police officer on duty all day but one will be there for at least a few minutes.

So let’s think this through.  Assuming I want to harm the children at the local middle school, starting on January 7, I will be watching the school for the arrival of a police car.  After the car departs I will make my entry.

I wonder how many terrorists have been stopped at airports in the boarding area.  The answer is none.  In previous years, the TSA has congratulated itself for confiscating home-made electronics, alerting the police to people with outstanding misdemeanour warrants and arresting people for wearing fake military uniforms. We spend $8 billion annually for the TSA to keep us safe.  This is not protection. This is make you feel safe and make you believe the government is protecting you and your family.

You don’t have to be Jewish!

You don’t have to be Jewish to appreciate this video but it helps.  There are great Jewish delicatessens wherever there is a large Jewish population.  So it’s not just NYC.  Think Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto, and Montreal.

Here in Los Angeles we have Langer’s, Canter’s, Jerry’s Famous, Brent’s, Junior’s, Factor’s, etc.  etc.  etc.   My favorite is Brent’s.

You don’t have to be Jewish to love the food!

OK ladies this is my blog.   I get to post what I want.  I am getting tired of politics.  I am looking forward to Tuesday November 6 so that we can focus on other things.  One thing to focus on is pretty models.  This is posted under Happiness and Good Mood because seeing a pretty girl do a modeling of clothes makes me happy.
