I remember the funny part of the movie that made Martin and Lewis famous. It was My Friend Irma. A 1949 American comedy film.

The storyline follows two women, Irma Peterson (Marie Wilson) and Jane Stacey (Diana Lynn), who room together in New York. Irma is a somewhat dim-witted blonde who deep down has good intentions. Jane is an ambitious woman who dreams of marrying a rich man. She winds up as a secretary for a millionaire, Richard Rhinelander (Don DeFore).

In that movie Martin and Lewis had a small part as operators of a street cart where they sold freshly squeezed juice. Jerry was the squeezer and he did it by hand not with a machine. He held up his hand as if squeezing a piece of fruit and said “I can’t even shake hands with my girl friend.” Of course it was the way he said it and his protruding jaw that made the scene so funny. Lewis had me laughing and the Martin and Lewis comedy team lasted for about ten years.

Crown Prince Frederick Hoepnick Laugh Montage Meets Donald Trump

Watching Donald Trump coaxing his followers to cheer his success in passing the AHCA (American Health Care Act) was in my mind really funny. That’s what they do when a television show has a live audience. An applause sign flashes to motivate that audience. Likewise there is a sign that tells audience members to laugh.

The entire spectacle reminded me of the movie “The Great Race.” Jack Lemon plays two parts in that movie. One as Crown Prince Frederick Hoepnick of the tiny kingdom of Pottsdorf. In the first part of this movie clip the crown prince wants his court to applaud at his every move. Donald Trump reminded me of that crown prince.

It’s called entertainment.

Happy Birthday Betty White! The actress is best known for “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “The Golden Girls” and “Hot in Cleveland.”

“The Golden Girls” is still being broadcast on cable television.

Here is a photo of Betty White at age 28. It was 1950. The beautiful brunette co-hosted music roundup Hollywood on Television for a whopping five hours a day, six days a week. “We were one of the only games in town,” she has said of her show with DJ Al Jarvis. “It was like television college.”
