How to Plan a Trip to Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone National Park is the most stunning and diverse natural wonder in the United States. With hundreds of miles of trails, dozens of geysers, and 14 lakes, it offers something for everyone. Whether you want to hike, kayak, camp, or just enjoy the scenery, Yellowstone National Park along with adjoining Teton National Park is a destination you won’t forget.
But planning a trip to Yellowstone can be challenging, especially if you want to make the most of your time and avoid the crowds. Here are some of the best tips and tricks to help you plan a successful and memorable trip to Yellowstone.
## Lodging must be your first priority
My first piece of advice if you’re going to Grand Teton and Yellowstone is to plan early. Lodging inside the Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks books up quickly, with the most desirable lodging snapped up as soon as reservations become available, sometimes more than a year in advance. Our trips were driving to the parks and arranging for a camp site. I made reservations for both trips. The first trip we stayed at a campground in Grand Teton. The choice was made because it is at a lower elevation and that meant warmer weather. But at 6,800 feet it is cold even in the middle of the summer. Fishing Bridge RV Park in the middle of Yellowstone is at 7,800 feet and is definitely colder. I know. My first visit to Yellowstone was in a cabin there (cabins are now gone).
## Research to decide the things you want to see
Everyone drives very slowly in the parks because everyone in your car along with you wants to see everything. In addition bears, bison, moose and other animals like to walk along and across the roads.
For me a must-do activity in Grand Teton National Park is a float trip down the Snake River. It has beautiful views, opportunities for animal-sightings, and great park information from the tour guide. Several concessionaires offer these trips in the park, including Signal Mountain Lodge and Jackson Lake Lodge. You can book them right along with your accommodations.
All of these photos are old 35mm slides with the exception of the picture of the bear family.

If you like hiking, you’ll love Grand Teton National Park. One of the best hikes—Inspiration Point and Hidden Falls—was closed while we visited because of a fissure in one of the rocks above the trail, but the trail re-opened in August 2018, after the park service found the area safe. If you go, don’t miss it.
You can take a short boat ride across Jenny Lake to access the Hidden Falls trailhead or you can hike around Jenny Lake to get there. The benefit of the hike around the lake is that you might see some wildlife you might not see elsewhere.

Everyone wants to see Old Faithful Geyser but in that area you may see many other geysers. They do not spray water on a daily basis. There are other geyser basins that also include hot pools. The Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park is the largest hot spring in the United States. Mammoth Hot Springs is a large complex of hot springs on a hill of travertine in Yellowstone National Park. Then there is Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. It is another extraordinary thing to see.
## Be ready to change your trail plans
Yellowstone/Teton is home to a variety of wildlife, including grizzly bears, black bears, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, and moose. While seeing these animals can be a highlight of your trip, it can also pose some risks. Sometimes, trails may close because of bear activity, or because of other hazards, such as snow, rockfall, or fire. To avoid disappointment, you should always check the trail status before you head out, and have some backup options in case your preferred trail is closed. You can check the trail status online, at the visitor centers, or by calling the park hotline.

## Consider West Yellowstone as your home base
This is a town that is at the entrance to the park and provides a variety of stores, gift shops, motels and nearby campgrounds. There is a live theater there that provides entertainment.
## Conclusion
Yellowstone and Teton National Parks is a bucket-list destination for many travelers, and for good reason. It offers unparalleled beauty, diversity, and adventure. But to make the most of your trip, you have to plan ahead and be flexible. By following these tips and tricks, you can have a smooth and enjoyable trip to Yellowstone and Teton National Parks.
Happy travels!

Are print displays of photography part of the past?
Like film, prints of the photos we take seems to be part of the past. It’s no wonder. Thanks to memory cards that hold thousands of pictures there really is no way we can print all of those images.
Costco is discontinuing its photo printing services at most of its stores due to slow demand.
I have a Canon inkjet printer that does a fabulous job of printing. I just do not use it very often. And that is the issue.
Just how many people are collecting prints of the photos they have taken? Thanks to our ability to take thousands of photos and show the best on line just who is scrapbooking anymore? My 64K memory card can hold over 11,000 pictures. The camera is set to take all photos as JPEGs at the highest megapixel count.
We have twenty albums that are rarely viewed. There is no more room for more albums. I get far more attention for my snaps showing them on-line. How about you?
It seems most people are displaying their photos on line on websites like Flickr and WordPress. I asked two avid amateur photographers if they create prints and their answer was rarely.
That bring me to the next question. If you can obtain outstanding photos for display on line with a smartphone what value is a $3,000 camera?
My photos get attention on this website and Facebook. They were taken with cameras that cost $300 to $500 and smartphones. Can you tell the difference? I cannot.
Oh, there are twelve photos that were printed and I proudly display at my house.

A wave building on Oahu’s North Shore, Hawaii
This photo was on my computer when I restarted the processor.
The North Shore on Oahu is a great place for photographers to capture vivid images of the Pacific in motion, as the beach’s legendary monster waves rise up before breaking on the beach. This long-exposure photograph, shot early in the morning, shows off the power and motion of the water as it rises to form a curled wave. These waves make the North Shore one of Hawaii’s prime surfing destinations. When his ship, the HMS Discovery, was navigating the South Pacific in 1778, British explorer Captain James Cook noted the locals out in the waves riding on boards. Surfboards date back to at least 500 CE and possibly much further back in history.
Do You Need a Digital SLR?
The holiday season is a popular time to buy a new camera. Do you really need a digital single lens reflex camera?
Consumer Reports (CR) is not a photography specialist organization. They are however a valuable source of worthwhile recommendations for everything from cars to washing machines to cameras. They have been testing cameras for decades.
Their 2019 Buying Guide offers this wise advise.
“If you don’t intend to change the lens on your camera, consider an advanced point-and-shoot, which has a fixed lens. Some models have large image sensors with excellent optics and lot of features.”
My old Panasonic DMC-FZ200 is a camera that does not have interchangeable lens option. It does have a fixed zoom lens that is adjustable from 25 millimeters to 600 millimeters. The camera was Panasonic’s most expensive “bridge” unit in 2012 and provides all the features of SLRs. The camera weighs 588 grams (1.3 pounds). The camera provides all modes and sport speed options. A remarkable feature is f2.8 aperture at all speeds.

12 FPS for sports photography and a variety of scene options including panorama that provides great photo from the Empire State Building or views from a cruise ship.
In addition I do not have to carry a bag holding additional lenses.
The latest version is the FZ1000’s with a 1″-type sensor that is around 4 times larger than those featured in most conventional superzooms, which allows for better high image quality and low light photography. The camera weighs 1.83 pounds (831 grams)
There are at least three options to the FZ1000. Sony’s Cyber-shot DSC-RX10, Nikon P1000, Canon SX70.
The last teacher I had on photography, offering a class at a community college this year, contends that high price cameras do not result in better photos. The adjustments to your camera (aperture, shutter speed, and focus is what makes the difference in those award winning shots. I agree with her.
Malibu Fire November 9, 2018
The entire city of Malibu California was evacuated. A stream of cars headed south to Santa Monica.
And what did President Trump say about the fires in California? He blamed the fires on forest mismanagement and threatened to withdraw related federal funding.
It is obvious to me that he hates California because it is dominated by the Democratic Party. This is the state that is most resistant to Donald Trump and everything he stands for.
A Change of Seasons and Perhaps a New Purpose
It has been a long hot summer in southern California. Maybe I am getting older but the humidity dripping off my face is something I do not remember in any past summer. I cut the dogs’ walk to just going to the corner and back. Freddy seemed to understand when we arrived at the far corner and would cross the street for a return down the block. Princess, a ten pound malti-poo, wants to take the regular two block walk no matter how hot it is.
To my surprise my daughter turned on the heater this morning. I understood Fall is here. Now at least the petunias and marigolds won’t wilt if they are watered every two or three days.
The never ending political soap opera has become boring as the reporters and commentators repeat the same information over and over.
It’s time for me to focus more time on my photography.
