Wanted: An American President Who Focuses on the Economy

As President Obama spoke to “the Mother of Parliaments” at Westminster Hall  in theU.K. I couldn’t help but notice that his recent focus has been on foreign affairs.  This first link is the words that appear on the White House website when you Google the words “president Obama’s recent agenda.”

Using those same Googled words I was reminded by USA Today that he recently paid a visit to Latin America in March.  Then it was “We Got Him” followed by a speech explaining his policies regarding the Middle East and North Africa.  Now he has followed this with a visit to Europe.

So where was time spent on the American economy?  This morning’s news on-line briefing advised me that More people applied for unemployment benefits.  It’s accurate.  I track it and there were 10,000 more claims this week than last for a total of 424,000 this week.

Then I Goggled “new laws that will create more jobs in America” and this pops up:

If Barack Obama continues to focus on foreign affairs it will take One Competent GOP candidate, that does not express extreme ideas, to easily win the presidency in November 2012.

Rick Santorum wants to be President

Former Senator Rick Santorum, who has announced Launching a Presidential Exploratory Committee, said Tuesday that Senator John McCain, who spent 5 1/2 years enduring brutal treatment at the hands of his North Vietnamese captors, doesn’t know how effective waterboarding and other harsh interrogation techniques can be. The Republican presidential contender insisted the tactics led the United States to al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.  McCain disputed Santorum’s contentions saying that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, did not provide information that led to bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan.  Santorum has no military experience.

On September 7, 2006, Santorum outlined his views on foreign policy in an op-ed piece for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and discussed Islamic fascism, closing with a rally cry:

“I believe we are at war with Islamic fascists and I singled out Iran and Syria as examples of Islamic fascist regimes. Many Muslims say the same thing, and the editors should, too, for it is undeniable. […]

I have said time and time again across Pennsylvania these past weeks that the fight against Islamic fascism is the great test of our generation. Leaders are obliged to articulate this threat and to propose what is necessary to defeat it. That is my purpose, and our national calling. The American people have always rallied to the cause of freedom once they understood what was at stake. I have no doubt that they will again.”

In a 2002 Washington Times op-ed article Santorum wrote that intelligent design “is a legitimate scientific theory that should be taught in science classes.”

Wikipedia provides an excellent biography of Rick Santorum.  Read it and you will understand that he is a true Christian conservative.  Most likely he would not appreciate some of the things reported about him.

America deserves better!

America Needs a New Leader

While everyone is celebrating the capture and death of Osama bin Laden, no one is watching the stove.  The water isn’t boiling over.  The pot is burning. I mean the economy.  Weekly Initial Job Claims increased by 43,000 people. Total initial claims were 474,000 people and have not been this high since the week of August 28, 2010.  (May 6, 2010: Unemployment rose from 8.8% to 9.0%).  Home values in Los Angeles have continued to drop to ever lower levels. The Median price is now $325,000.  That is more than 2% below last years March number.  In 2007 the median home price was $560,000.

So I ask, what laws have been passed or what actions has the government taken to reverse the trend?  NONE.  The recent reduction in new job claims cannot be attributed to any government activity.  Commodity prices have been driven up by speculators but there is no justification for the price increases.  World demand doesn’t spike in just a few days or weeks.

Neither political party has a clue on ways to revive the economy.  They know they have no ideas.  Thus they march out diversions.  It’s the budget issues, Planned Parenthood, the national debt, Medicare, or anything else that will divert your attention.

We need leaders with new ideas.  Sadly none are on the horizon.

Trump: ‘Our leaders are stupid’

If I was going to create an outrageous candidate for President he just might speak like Donald Trump.  This could be the lead character in a B movie.

By Cristina Silva The Associated Press

LAS VEGAS – Real estate developer and TV showman Donald Trump fueled speculation that he’ll enter the 2012 White House race, assuring a crowd of supporters at a Las Vegas casino that he is seriously weighing a presidential run in a speech laced with the F-word.

The setting Thursday night was fitting for the casino mogul whose moniker is draped across the gold-tinged Trump International Hotel & Tower just off the Las Vegas Strip. An open bar greeted more than 1,000 people, waiters passed hors d’oeuvres, and a Trump impersonator entertained the crowd.

At one point, a woman in the lavish reception at the Treasure Island casino yelled out that Trump should run for president.

“I think I am going to make you very happy,” the developer said.

But he later said, “There is a real good chance that no matter what happens I won’t win because one of these blood-sucking politicians who’s been bulls—ing people for years will end up still getting elected.”

During a 30-minute stump speech focused mostly on foreign affairs, Trump sprinkled in a number of swear words and insults directed toward global leaders.

“Our leaders are stupid, they are stupid people,” he said. “It’s just very, very sad.”

Trump also blasted President Barack Obama’s handling of Libya,Iraq,China and Afghanistan, and in one of his many curse-bombs, he lamented the nation’s focus on building schools in war-torn Afghanistan while neglecting education in the United States.

He said he wouldn’t help struggling nations such as South Korea,Iraq or Libya without payment.

“I’m interested in protecting none of them unless they pay,” he said.

When discussing trade, he said he would tell China’s leaders, “Listen you motherf——, we’re going to tax you 25 percent.”

A frequent critic of the federal health care law passed last year, Trump said the Supreme Court should decide the dozens of lawsuits challenging the legislation and urged district courts not to waste their time on it.

Trump has created waves by questioning whether the president was born in the U.S. Obama produced his detailed Hawaii birth certificate Wednesday, and Trump eagerly took credit for the reveal.

Trump’s visit to Nevada came a day after he traveled to New Hampshire, which is set to host the first presidential primary in 2012.

We Want The Best President

The argument over Barack Obama’s birthplace seems to me of little value.  There is no credible evidence he was born elsewhere.  The question ought to be “How well is he doing as president?”  I was born in Canada.  My parents moved to the United States less than six months later.  If only they had contained themselves for those six months I could have been eligible to be president of this country.  For that reason alone, I and many other loyal Americans are denied the opportunity to reach America’s highest office.  I am not certain that Arnold Schwarzenegger would be elected to the presidency but why would we deny someone who is clearly devoted to America the opportunity to run for leading the country?  Some of the brightest and smartest Americans were born elsewhere.

Our former Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright was born in Czechoslovakia.  Joseph Pulitzer was was born in Hungary in 1847.  He made his way to America to join the Union Army during the Civil War.  Supreme Court justice Felix Frankfurter was born in Vienna, Austria in 1882 and moved with his family to the United States in 1894.  Irving Berlin was born in Russia in 1888. He is the composer of “White Christmas,” “Easter Parade” and “God Bless America.”  Dr. Rita M. Rodriguez, a former director of the Export-Import Bank of the United States, was born in Oriente, Cuba in 1942.  Sidney Harman (deceased this year), founder of Harman Kardon Industries (famous for Hi-fi sound systems) was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.  Mortimer Benjamin “Mort” Zuckerman (born June 4, 1937) is a Canadian-born American magazine editor, publisher (U.S. News and World Report, etc.), and real estate billionaire. He is a naturalized citizen of the United States. Google co- founder Sergey Brin (born in Russia and moved to the U.S. at age 6).

A well known host of a quiz show, born in Canada, that asks the contestants to provide the questions.  I am sure you know many more great foreign born Americans.

Gas Price Investigation

Is this business or politics?

Here is the title of an April 25, 2006 posting by Fox News.

Bush Announces Gas Price Investigation

WASHINGTON — With gas prices on the rise, President Bush on Tuesday offered suggestions for reducing oil costs, including increasing refinery capacity and conservation, to diversify away from oil through the use of alternative fuels like ethanol.

Under pressure from lawmakers and the public who have alleged price gouging by oil companies, the president also said he has ordered a probe of price manipulation and market speculation. On Tuesday, he also ordered a temporary halt of deliveries to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

Today President Obama called for an investigation of price gouging.

Obama orders investigation of gas prices

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — President Barack Obama has ordered the Justice Department to investigate potential price gouging at the pump.

Attorney General Eric Holder will appoint a task force to examine both gasoline sales and potential manipulation in oil markets.

Read the rest here.

It’s politics!  The president does not have the power to control gasoline prices.  Check the price in other free market nations and you will find the cost of gasoline is more there than in the United States.

Who should seek the presidency or challenge President Obama for nomination in 2012?

The question was posed by the Los Angeles Daily News.

Here are some of the answers the newspaper printed.

‘Good’ isn’t good enough

Ten presidents were defeated for re-election including John Adams, Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush. Thus we know that even good presidents can be beaten. President Barack Obama did not bring us “change you can believe in.” The problem for the Republicans is that they do not yet have a strong candidate. Look who replaced the three I identified: Thomas Jefferson, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton. All three were great leaders. Mediocre or good enough will not bring a win for the GOP.

Continuing support for Obama

There is not one Republican candidate qualified to run for president against President Barack Obama, who seems to be going out of his way to cross the aisle to avoid an assassination threat. President Obama will have my vote and be re-elected in 2012, after cleaning up most of the mess left by the Bush/Cheney administration.

Waiting for sensible contender

I suggest they find a normal, working-class man. A person with brains and common sense, with at least a high school or some college education who can realize that another four years of President Obama will never ever get us out of debt.

.

Other letters supported New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert, Herman Cain (he used to be the CEO of Godfather’s Pizza), and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

Although there was no supporters for Donald Trump among the letter writers, he is at least the most well-known and certainly one of the smartest people in the GOP.  Then again California had Arnold Schwarzenegger as governor and that didn’t turn out too well.

The President’s Debt Reduction Speech

The president’s (read the transcript here> debt reduction speech was both good and bad.  He told us he would stand up to the Republicans and refuse to sign legislation that would end Medicare. He told us that slightly higher taxes for the very wealthy would not harm them or the country and he was correct. Then he wandered into a wilderness that included the Vice President will begin regular meetings with leaders in both parties with the aim of reaching a final agreement on a plan to reduce the deficit by the end of June.”

What happened to the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform (also called Bowles-Simpson). That was a Presidential Commission created in 2010 by President Barack Obama to identify “…policies to improve the fiscal situation in the medium term and to achieve fiscal sustainability over the long run.” The commission first met on April 27, 2010. A report was released on December 1, 2010, but failed a vote on December 3 with 11 of 18 votes in favor, with a supermajority of 14 votes needed to formally endorse the blueprint.

Do we really need another group to study the issues?  At the very least Bowles-Simpson was headed by two highly respected former government leaders.  It’s not that Joe Biden is not respected but he is the current Democratic Vice President.

If the Joe Biden committee delivers real reform by reaching compromise with Republicans than the effort will be worthwhile but is that likely?  Not in the present environment.

Elections Have Consequences

Wisconsin’s governor, Scott Walker, ran for office on a pledge to do exactly what he is doing. Wisconsin may be known as a strong liberal state but the voters had a choice. The public employees may not like the results but elections have consequences.

Wisconsin Democratic Senate members ran away en masse to Illinois so that they could stop a vote on a bill they oppose. This is not democracy. Nineteen members of that senate are Republicans and fourteen are Democrats. The results of the vote against the unions are obvious.

This is the way our system of government is supposed to work. The losers in each election must accept the fact that the majority of voters did not agree with their viewpoint. The Democrats lost.
