A Republican President in 2013

Barack Obama does not understand the needs and wants of most Americans.  He misunderstood the meaning of his celebrated election.  Americans were proud of the fact that they had risen above race in electing their president.  His Race was not the reason he was elected. He does not understand the reason he won the election.  Here are some things he and his advisers do not understand.

1. Mr. Obama wanted to believe most Americans had read his books and supported his views.  Most did not read his books.  Most people did not know the meaning of “change.”

2. He and his advisers neglected to consider his opponent, John McCain.  If elected the senator would have been 72 years old at his inauguration.  That fact alone was a concern to many people. Added to that issue was the concern most people had about Sarah Palin becoming President.  Many conservative journalists voiced this view.  Among them was Kathleen Parker.

3. His speeches in Europe, prior to his election, seemed well received, but they were not given to Americans.  American views of the world are considerably different from those of Europeans.  Most Europeans do not view significant involvement in other country’s affairs an appropriate foreign policy.

4. As a consequence of the 9-11 World Trade Center attack Americans want to insulate themselves to the extent that there will never be another attack in this country.  Compare that view with the calmer behavior of Europeans after attacks in London and Madrid.  The Eiffel Tower has been evacuated at least twice this year and there was little hysteria surrounding those incidents.  Mumbai, India was the victim of a terrorist attack in 2009.  In each of those instances those nations did not display the hysterics that has been so prevalent in the United States.  Consider the American reaction to the Detroit Bomber, the Times Square bomber, and the shooting at Fort Hood.

5. The financial crises has impacted almost every family in America.  Despite that, Mr. Obama has marched to a different drummer.  He saw his mandate as clear. Change is what he promised and that was what he has determined to carry out.

Instead of listening to James Carville’s famous words, “It’s the economy, Stupid”, Mr. Obama has decided to stay the course.  Howard Fineman of the Huffington Post reported on the Chris Matthews show that David Axelrod indicated there will be no consequential changes to the Obama Whitehouse.  Nancy Pelosi and her entire team will be the face of the Democratic Party.

Unless there is a change of course there will be a Republican president elected in November 2012.

The George W. Bush Autobiography

Every president of the United States wants to be remembered as one of the best that ever lived.  So it’s no wonder that George W. Bush has written an autobiography that conveys that message.  To sell the book and his place in history as one of our best presidents he has appeared on some widely watched television shows including Oprah Winfrey and a special hosted by Matt Lauer.

I am quite certain that most Republicans will praise him as a great leader.  The facts do not support that opinion.  Neither his religion nor his good intent is in question.  What is questionable is his judgment.  He surrounded himself with people whose motives are very questionable.  He doesn’t regret taking the country into a war in Iraq that was based upon faulty information. He sees no error in his decision to limit the troop build up in Afghanistan and the limited search for Osama bin Laden.  He sees nothing wrong with the Federal response to the Katrina Hurricane that devastated New Orleans.  He blocked the use of Federal dollars for stem cell research. Finally at the end of his presidency he promoted the bailout of Wall Street bankers and poorly managed commercial banks.

He wants to be remembered as the president who prevented another terrorist attack like 9-11 which did happen while he was president.  He had been warned of the possibility of such an attack by the Clinton administration.  He went to extremes to ensure there would not be another attack that resulted in the Patriot Act which many people believe is an infringement of individual rights guaranteed by the Constitution.  He instituted the Department of Homeland Security that has had questionable success.  He opened a prison at Guantanamo Bay that denies its prisoners the right to a speedy trial and instituted water boarding.

There are too many other things his administration did that were clearly extreme and possibly illegal.  I wrote about some of them back on September 17, 2008.

So I am stuck trying to determine what happened during his presidency that would qualify him to be considered even a good president let alone a great president.

November 12, 2010: Now to add even more to this obviously flawed book is a report on Huffington Post that some of the information he imparts was lifted from advisers books.  Copies are now in Costco at less than $23.00.

“What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate!”

A quote from Cool Hand Luke, 1967.

If ever I watched our elected officials in denial it occurred this past week. The leaders of both political parties continued to march to their own drummer without regard to the needs and wishes of the electorate. Is it any wonder that so many people do not vote and say that their voting would mean nothing?

John Boehner is focused on taxes and health care. Mitch McConnell is focused on making Barack Obama a one term president. The president and the Democrats are focused on defending their last two years of legislation. Barack Obama has said that it was not his policies that were wrong. Instead contends that he had not adequately communicated the benefits of his policies.

The number one issue is the economy and JOBS. No one in either party is discussing this issue. Perhaps the reason is they do not have one good idea to solve the problem of unemployment.

If ever there was an opportunity for a third political party it is now!

Keith Olbermann Suspended for Giving Political Donations

Posted on AOLNEWS.COM

(Nov. 5 ) — Here’s one story you will be talking about tomorrow.

MSNBC liberal talk show host Keith Olbermann has been suspended indefinitely without pay from MSNBC after his boss learned he had violated newsroom policies by giving campaign contributions to three Democratic candidates for Congress.

That is the same Keith Olbermann who pummeled Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. for giving $1 million to the Republican Governors Association in order to buy “campaign influence.”

Olbermann video.

Oops.

In a terse statement today, MSNBC TV President Phil Griffin said, “I became aware of Keith’s political contributions late last night. Mindful of NBC News policy and standards, I have suspended him indefinitely without pay.”

The news that the liberal flamethrower had thrown cash to three congressional candidates was first reported by Politico.

Olbermann acknowledged in a statement that he made the donations:

“One week ago, on the night of Thursday October 28 2010, after a discussion with a friend about the state of politics in Arizona, I donated $2,400 each to the re-election campaigns of Democratic Representatives Raul Grijalva and Gabrielle Giffords,” Olbermann said. “I also donated the same amount to the campaign of Democratic Senatorial candidate Jack Conway in Kentucky.”

Olbermann said he did not use his influence to solicit donations from others for the candidates.

“I did not privately or publicly encourage anyone else to donate to these campaigns, nor to any others in this election or any previous ones, nor have I previously donated to any political campaign at any level,” Olbermann said.

The shocking news, as the often holier-than-thou commentator might put it, came at an interesting time. Three days earlier, stung by ridicule at last week’s Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear, Olbermann said he would shelve his trademark daily segment, “Worst Persons in the World.”

NEW YORK (AP) — MSNBC says Keith Olbermann will be back on the air Tuesday, ending his suspension for violating NBC’s rules against making political donations after two shows.

MSNBC’s chief executive Phil Griffin said late Sunday that after several days of deliberation, he had determined that two days off the air was “an appropriate punishment for his violation of our policy.”

November 7, 2010 Update

The following news item really says that MSNBC’s most  popular program cannot be kept off the air because MONEY speaks louder than behavior.

Do You Know the Bill of Rights?

The qualifications to hold a Senate or House of Representatives seat are very low.  You must meet an age requirement and be a resident of the state you represent.  There is no requirement for specific education or experience.  You do not need to know the U.S. Constitution.

Thus we have the case of Christine O’Donnell who is running for Senator from Delaware.  Her opponent, Chris Coons, gave an approximate yet accurate summation of the first part of the establishment clause, “Government shall make no establishment of religion,” O’Donnell responded by asking, “That’s in the First Amendment?” The exchange takes place at the 4:40 mark in the video below.

CNN’s Anderson Cooper recently took a deeper look at O’Donnell’s repeated claims of constitutional expertise and filed the following blistering report, noting that beyond the First Amendment, O’Donnell needed to be reminded of what the 14th and 16th said, despite claiming to have conducted “a deep analysis” of the founding document.

O’Donnell blanks on First Amendment

Should we ask our representatives about the Bill of Rights?

THE RICH WIN!!

It is a mystery to me how government decides when to prosecute someone for a financial crime.

The injustice being perpetrated against society in the Angelo Mozilo case only goes to support the common view that the rich are treated differently from the rest of us.  Here is a man that has a reported $1 billion net worth but rather than taking back his illicitly gotten gains they take little or nothing away from him personally. The government then settles for money from escrow accounts established by Countrywide and Bank of America.

Martha Stewart spent five months in jail and was under house arrest for five months.  Her crime was lying about her stock transactions.  Stewart avoided a loss of $45,673 by selling some stock.  I guess she was too poor to justify just a fine.  Wikipedia puts her wealth at $913 million.

There are special interests in America.  They do have overwhelming power in the government.  Barack Obama talks a good line but he is part of the power elite.  He surrounded himself  with a group of advisers who are all well connected.  It has always been this way.  “Who Rules America?”  details the fact that the wealthiest 1% of Americans control 42.7% of all wealth in the country.  No doubt it is class warfare.  THE RICH WIN!!

Sarah Palin Tests 2012 Message

So far Sarah Palin has come off as a sloganeer with little real message.  This new slogan could easily rally her followers.  It goes to the heart of everyone wanting to restore America to greatness.

By ANDY BARR | 10/11/10 12:21 PM EDT Updated: 10/11/10 12:47 PM EDT

Sarah Palin spoke publicly over the weekend about the 2012 race for the first time in months, mapping out what she sees as the themes for the presidential election.

“These two elections, 2010 and 2012, go hand-in-hand,” Palin said Sunday at a business conference in Bakersfield, according a report from NBC. “The theme of 2010 has got to be rebuke their errors, reject, repeal; and then the theme of 2012 — it’s renew, revive and restore.”

Up until the weekend, the former Alaska governor had been deflecting almost all 2012 speculation by saying only that she was focused on November’s midterm election.

But in her speech Sunday, Palin outlined the message she or other potential Republican candidates should push to counter President Barack Obama.

Palin said that Republicans should pledge to “renew our optimistic, pioneering spirit, revive our free market system and restore constitutional limits and our standing in the world, as that abiding beacon of freedom.”

The message, she said, should be “not transformation but restoration with a ‘Great Awakening’ that we already feel emerging across America.”

“We will win this year, we will win this year,” she said. “And I believe we will win in 2012.”

The Congressman Remained Quiet

A Congressman was seated next to a little girl on an airplane so he turned to her and said, “Do you want to talk? Flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger.”

The little girl, who had just started to read her book, replied to the total stranger, What would you want to talk about?”

“Oh, I don’t know,” said the congressman. “How about global warming, universal health care, or stimulus packages?” as he smiled smugly.

“OK,” she said. “but let me ask you a question first.   A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff – grass. Yet a deer poops little pellets, a cow turns out a flat patty, and a horse produces clumps. Why is that?”

The legislator, visibly surprised by the little girl’s intelligence, thinks about it and says, “Hmmm, I have no idea.”

To which the little girl replies, “Do you really feel qualified to discuss global warming, universal health care, or the economy, when you don’t know shit?”

The congressman remained quiet for the rest of the flight.

The Rich Get Richer … And You Know the Rest

The gap between rich and poor in the U.S. is the widest on record, according to the latest data released by the U.S. Census BureauMedian (mid- point) household income fell 2.9 percent nationwide, from $51,726 to $50,221.  Corporations are reported to be sitting on at least $1.6 Trillion cash. Obama wants to extend tax cuts enacted under President George W. Bush for households earning less than $250,000 and allow them to expire for those above but Republicans want to extend the cuts for all income groups and are pushing for corporate tax relief.

A strike at a Mott’s apple-juice plant in Williamson, N.Y.is nearly four months old.  The parent company of Mott’s is Dr Pepper and is pushing for $1.50 per hour pay cut.  Mott’s is reported to be highly profitable but the company wants align factory costs with “local and industry standards.” Or, in other words wants to pay workers the same low pay that others are earning in depressed upstate New York.

Still the G.O.P. is expected to gain control of the House of Representatives.  Are Americans asleep?
