Disposition of a Body

A colleague penned the following comment about the disposal of bin Laden’s “holy body.”  Worth a read. 

On February 21, 2002, a videotape was released titled “The Slaughter of the Spy-Journalist, the Jew Daniel Pearl.”  The video shows Pearl’s decapitated and mutilated body.  On March 10, 2007, Khalid Sheikh Muhammad, reputed to be third in command of Al Qaeda under Osama bin Laden,  confessed (boasted?) to his captors. ” I decapitated with my blessed right hand the head of the American Jew Daniel Pearl, in the city of Karachi, Pakistan.” He repeated that statement during before the military tribunal. Pearl’s body was cut in ten pieces and left to rot in a shallow grave. There was no  cry of
indignation among Pakistani religious authorities about whether Pearl was given a proper burial, although a Muslim philanthropist hated by the extremists, Abdul Sattar Edhi, collected the body parts and arranged to send them to California for burial. In the aftermath of the killing of Osama bin Laden and his burial at sea, there have been complaints by some Muslim religious authorities that, by burying OBL at sea,  American authorities did not give him the respectful burial to which every Muslim is entitled. I also thought of the hundreds of workers at the World Trade Center who were incinerated by OBL and his crew whose bodies could never be buried in individual graves that their families could recognize. There is something viciously asymmetrical in that moral calculus. Those teachers and religious leaders are quick to complain about slights they believe that been done to their own, yet have not a word on behalf of those they consider infidels. In a way, it’s the same thing with their vicious calls for the killing of all Jews (e.g. Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi) and their demands for laws against “Islamophobia” and hate speech against Islam.

Prince William and Kate Middleton Wedding Day: Minute by Minute

More details have emerged about the royal wedding day, right down to the minute.

To start with, it’s revealed that Kate Middleton will be spending her final night of single-dom at the Goring Hotel, nearby Buckingham Palace. (Don’t bother looking … it’s fully booked for April 28). It’s reported that the bride-to-be, her sister Pippa and mom Carole will be staying in a five-room suite, complete with a four-poster bed and a grand piano,

From the moment Kate awakens (if she even gets any sleep), everything is on the clock. Here’s how the day will break down. (These are London times. For Eastern times, subtract five hours: Western times subtract eight hours):

  • Between 8.15 am and 9.45 am (3:15-4:45 Eastern):  The general congregation will arrive at the Great North Door of Westminster Abbey.
  • From 9.50am:  Governors-General and Prime Ministers of realm countries,the diplomatic corps, and other distinguished guests arrive at the Abbey.
  • 10.10am: Prince William and Prince Henry of Wales leave Clarence House for Westminster Abbey.  They arrive at the Abbey at 10.15 am.
  • 10.20 am: Members of Foreign Royal Families arrive at Westminster Abbey from Buckingham Palace.
  • 10.20 am: Carole Middleton, Kate’s mom, and brother James Middleton leave the Goring Hotel for Westminster Abbey.  They arrive at the Abbey at 10.27 am.
  • 10.25 am: Members of the Royal Family (except those listed below) leave Buckingham Palace for Westminster Abbey.  They arrive at the Abbey at 10.30am.
    • 10.35 am: The following Members of the Royal Family leave Buckingham Palace for Westminster Abbey.  They arrive at the Abbey at 10.40am

                 – The Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Timothy Laurence
                 – The Duke of York
                 – Princess Eugenie of York
                 – Princess Beatrice of York
                 – The Earl and Countess of Wessex

  • 10.38 am: The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall leave Clarence House for Westminster Abbey.  They arrive at the Abbey at 10.42 am.
  • 10.40 am: The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh leave Buckingham Palace for Westminster Abbey.  They arrive at the Abbey at 10.45 am.
  •  10.48 am: The bridesmaids and Pages leave the Goring Hotel for Westminster Abbey.  They arrive at the Abbey at 10.55 am.
  • 10.51am The Bride, accompanied by Mr. Michael Middleton, leaves the Goring Hotel for Westminster Abbey.
  •  11.00 am The marriage service begins.  The service will be relayed by audio speakers along the route.
  • 12.15 pm: The carriage procession of the bride and bridegroom with a Captain’s Escort of the Household Cavalry, followed by The Queen’s procession with a Sovereign’s Escort of the Household Cavalry, leaves Westminster Abbey for Buckingham Palace.
  • 12.30 pm: The bride’s carriage procession arrives at Buckingham Palace.
  • 12.40 pm: Members of the royal family and Members of foreign royal families arrive at Buckingham Palace.
  • From 12.40 pm: Other guests for the Reception arrive at Buckingham Palace.
  • 1.25 pm:  The Queen and the bride and bridegroom, together with their families, appear on the balcony.
  • 1.30 pm:  Flypast by the Royal Air Force and Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

I Stand With Planned Parenthood

Stop the War on Women!

We Need Planned Parenthood! 

It troubles me deeply that there are people in the United States that want to deny the poorest among us the availability of health care.  Those who would stop funding for abortions also want to deny poor people access to birth control.  Planned Parenthood has said that only a small part of its services involve abortions, and that stripping its federal funding would curb cancer screenings, HIV testing, birth control and other medical needs.

“More than 90% of the healthcare Planned Parenthood provides is preventive,” the organization’s president Cecile Richards said in a statement.

If those opposing Planned Parenthood have their way poor women would bare children they cannot adequately care for and would have to rely on welfare payments.  Apparently those wanting to de-fund Planned Parenthood believe that abstinence must be the behavior of the poor.  That is an unlikely expectation.

Fox News Finally Wakes Up!

Glenn Beck should have been recognized by Fox News channel as being a few cards short of a full deck along time ago.  Perhaps he was a money maker but he also tarred that TV network as willing to surrender its “conservative” values for just plain loony talk that is not based upon reality.  Advertisers prevailed.

The Toronto Star (yes the network even has an outlet there) offered this summary of Glenn Beck’s greatest quotes.

To commemorate this week’s announcement that Glenn Beck’s daily show on Fox News will end later this year, we present a round-up of just a few of the words of wisdom to escape his lips during his reign.

1. “I’m a rodeo clown . . . (and) if you take what I say as gospel, you’re an idiot.”

2. “The most used phrase in my administration if I were to be President would be, ‘What the hell you mean we’re out of missiles?’”

3. “This president (Barack Obama) I think has exposed himself over and over and over again as a guy who has a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture . . . I’m not saying he doesn’t like white people, I’m saying he has a problem. This guy is, I believe, a racist.”

4. “I’m thinking about killing Michael Moore.”

5. “When I see a 9/11 victim family on television, or whatever, I’m just like, ‘Oh shut up.’ I’m so sick of them because they’re always complaining.”

Less Competition is Great for Business


The stock market shot up early on Monday March 21. Trading up by 1.5%.  The reason?  AT&T is buying T-Mobile.  The consequence of this planned purchase is that there will now be just three national cell phone carriers.  It’s a great benefit for the carriers.  With less competition the cost of services will most assuredly increase.  That means more profit for AT&T Sprint, and Verizon.  The consolidation must be approved by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Communications Commission (FCC).  Who doubts this won’t be approved?  The losers will be the public.

There is no justification for this proposed buy-out.  Both AT&T and T-Mobile are profitable companies.  The fact that AT&T service is poor is not a societal concern.  What ought to be a concern is the likely impact of reduced competition.

 David Lazarus of the Los Angeles Times wrote about this same issue in the March 21, 2011 edition.

This is not the first time there has been an attack on competition.  Compared to just ten years ago there are fewer banks, department stores, drug stores, and supermarkets now then existed then.  Here in Los Angeles there are just four major banks to serve a population of 10 million people.  They are Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Chase, and Citibank.  Other banking companies in the city are significantly smaller.

There is no Teddy Roosevelt alive today.  This trend will not change if the public remains quiet.

The First Amendment Protects those we Despise

Christian Dior has fired head designer John Galliano over anti-Semitic and racist remarks he allegedly made on two occasions.  The AP reports that Paris prosecutors ordered Galliano to stand trial in the coming months over alleged racial insults.  Unlike France, that most of us think is a free country, in the United States you really do have Freedom of Speech!

Remember the KKK marches in Skokie, Illinois?  The ACLU defended the right to march and display hate.

Can you see any difference between these two videos?

Once again the right to hate has been upheld.  The Supreme Court has ruled that the First Amendment protects fundamentalist church members who mount anti-gay protests outside military funerals, despite the pain they cause grieving families.  The court voted 8-1 in favor of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas.  Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the opinion for the court. Justice Samuel Alito dissented.

“Speech is powerful. It can stir people to action, move them to tears of both joy and sorrow, and — as it did here — inflict great pain. On the facts before us, we cannot react to that pain by punishing the speaker,” Roberts said. “As a nation we have chosen a different course — to protect even hurtful speech on public issues to ensure that we do not stifle public debate.”

Alito strongly disagreed. “Our profound national commitment to free and open debate is not a license for the vicious verbal assault that occurred in this case,” he said.
