Is AARP a Non-Profit Organization?

“UnitedHealth quarterly profit tops Wall Street views”

UnitedHealth’s fourth-quarter net income rose 30 percent to $944 million, or 81 cents per share, from $726 million, or 60 cents per share, a year earlier, when the company took a big litigation charge.”

This is the company that is in league with AARP as the low cost health care provider for senior citizens. Reuters reports that “For its UnitedHealthcare plans serving employers, the company reported a decline of 130,000 members from the end of the third quarter, to 24.63 million. But it said the plans would have seen growth of 40,000 members if not for job cuts at continuing clients. Total membership stood at 32 million at the end of December.”

Yes, I am a member of AARP.  I am not a United Health member and never have been.  The question is how much does AARP earn through their association with United Health Plan?

Well look what I found reading in part as follows. “The group and its subsidiaries collected more than $650 million in royalties and other fees last year from the sale of insurance policies, credit cards and other products that carry the AARP name, accounting for the majority of its $1.14 billion in revenue …”

My opinion is that AARP is a business that many over 50 years of age think is a non-profit organization.  It isn’t!

Want proof?  Here are three of many links that also question the the AARP claim that they are a non-profit organization.  Then again may be these web sites have an axe to grind.

Haiti – Now What?

Watching the reports on television from Haiti makes me realize that the United States is now involved with a situation that will impact our nation in ways we cannot yet imagine.  I did not know that the U.S. had occupied Haiti from 1915 to 1934 until there was mention of this on a few network broadcasts.  A search on the internet confirmed this fact.  There are various explanations about why and how this occupation occurred.  This link is at least thorough.  San Jose State University in California has an updated history that is probably unbiased.

Everything that has been told and shown about Haiti since the earthquake says years of work to make that country a functioning nation.   Larry King’s drive to collect donations for helping the people there is admirable but falls far short of their needs.

Rebuilding that nation so that it can function on its on feet will take Billions of dollars.  Where will that money come from?

A Church’s Failure

The mere fact that Pope Benedict XVI defended his predecessor Pius XII against Jewish critics speaks louder than all speeches to the world.  Visits to synagogues by Pope Benedict XVI contending that the Vatican “itself provided assistance, often in a hidden and discreet way” only gives recognition to the church’s failure to stand up to all Nazi atrocities.

Most of Europe (and the United States too) stood silent while the massacre of Jews occurred.  What is more astonishing is that millions of non-Jews were also murdered by the Third Reich and the church remained silent.

Pius XII will undoubtedly be declared a saint no matter what the opinion of the rest of the world.  Benedict’s decision to revoke the excommunication of a renegade bishop, who had denied that millions of Jews died in the Holocaust, only adds to the proof that religion is no longer a guiding light.

A Sense of Urgency

The Common Trait of Highly Productive People, Companies, and Countries is a sense of urgency.  In just the past 24 hours we have had a human tragedy in Haiti.  No one knows how many people have been killed by the earthquake that has devestated their capital city, Port- au- Prince.  The president of the United States has said that aid will be sent immediately.  CNN has already reported the sighting of American military personnel. That is an example of responding with a sense of urgency.

America’s response to the bombing of Pearl Harbor was accomplished with a sense of urgency.   Henry Paulson’s message to Congress for aid to the banking community was quickly answered with TARP.  However, America’s response to the devastation brought on by Hurricane Katrina did not show the same sense.   California’s serious debt problems have not been addressed with a sense of urgency.

Corporations have also had mixed responses to their predicaments.  General Motors did not apply sensible action to their faltering sales for years.  That is a company that didn’t need urgency.  All they needed was attention and they failed.  Union Carbide showed no sense of urgency in the chemical spill in Bhopal, India.

The entertainment and news industries are fast to respond.  With falling rating it didn’t take long for NBC to determine that Jay Leno’s primetime show had to move to late night or be canceled.  The making of Avatar took two years (excluding the writing).  All the networks have significant reporters in Haiti in just 24 yours.  All of them had reports on their news programs within hours of the earthquake.

We need a sense of urgency in getting our economy functioning properly.  The politicians would rather squabble.  Their behavior ought to give us the motivation to show them the door.  Unfortunately democracy does not provide a sense of urgency.

Enough to Quiet Holocaust Deniers

It is now more than 60 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe.  This blog entry is in memory of the six million Jews, 20 million Russians, 10 million Christians and 1,900 Catholic priests who were murdered, massacred, raped, burned, starved and humiliated while the German and Russia peoples were looking the other way! Now, more than ever, with Iran among others, claiming the Holocaust to be “a myth,” it is imperative to make sure the world never forgets.

This linked story  was originally aired  on Sunday, June 24, 2007 on “60 MINUTES” about a long-secret German archive that houses a treasure trove of information on 17.5 million victims of the Holocaust. The archive, located in the German town of Bad Arolsen, is massive (there are 16 miles of shelving containing 50 million pages of documents) and until recently, was off-limits to the public. But after the German government agreed earlier this year to open the archives, CBS News’ Scott Pelley traveled there with three Jewish survivors who were able to see their own Holocaust records. It’s an incredibly moving piece, all the more poignant in the wake of this week’s meeting of Holocaust deniers in Iran.

Goals or Resolutions for 2010

Most of us know that New Year’s resolutions are usually forgotten by the end of January.  It’s just in our nature to make promises to ourselves and then forget them as quickly as we made them.

However, there is one thing we all need to consider as we start the new year.  Prepare a list of goals.  You do not have to do this on January 1.  You may not have a really good vision of goals on this New Year weekend.  It isn’t necessary to have a list.  It might be just one goal.

The idea is to do some introspection to establish something you really want to achieve.  It is one or more things that are achievable at some distant time that will require your investment in time and perhaps money.

What is the point of this exercise?  To make something of your life better than it is now.  It could even be losing weight but that might seem like a resolution.

Where do you want to be on December 31, 2010?  Here is a resolution.  Resolve to set at least one goal that will improve your life.  Even the richest of us can make our lives better than today.

OK, maybe Bernie Madoff can’t make things better for himself.

America Wants Accomplishments Not Words

“Words! Words! I’m so sick of words!” from My Fair Lady.

President Barack Obama is a fabulous speaker.  His Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech in Oslo only reinforces that fact.  He told us all his views of America in a well worded presentation.  Many outspoken Republicans have said complimentary things about the speech.  None the less, Rush Limbaugh may have his hopes fulfilled.  President Obama is struggling to find some success.

  1. It has been reported that President Obama wants to spend $200 Billion of TARP money on a second round of government sponsored stimulus.  The first $$787 Billion has not been spent.  It’s obvious that the money spent to date was not used for “shovel ready” projects.   “There are plenty of ways to stimulate small businesses, including three-quarters of the stimulus money we have not spent yet without adding billions and billions in debt through TARP, which is basically a line of credit,” Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona, Obama’s opponent in the 2008 presidential election, said at a news conference.
  2. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are viewed inconsistently by Obama.  In his desire to please anti-war Democrats and please moderate Americans his position is a moving target.  When the war in Iraq was going poorly he stressed his opposition to the 2007 troop surge but later when the surge was successful he grudgingly acknowledged success.  Just last week, in a speech at West Point, the plan to stop the Taliban and al-Qaeda in Afghanistan will be accomplished using a 30,000 man troop surge but without using the word “surge.”  To please those opposing the war he says that troop withdrawals will begin in July 2011 but the secretaries of defense and state say that we will only review our commitment on that date.
  3. Health care for all Americans has been a cornerstone of Obama’s vision.  He says he wants it to be deficit neutral, cut costs, and improve quality.  The reality is that he has never outlined his vision of how to achieve these goals.  There is nothing in the plans proposed by either the House of Representatives or the Senate that addresses these objectives.  Instead there is a Democratic Party objective to pass a law for the president’s signature even if no objectives are met.
  4. Few of us fully understand climate change issues.  Politicians are trying to impose more control everywhere in the world to save humanity.  It’s a nice goal as long as it doesn’t cost me any money is the view of most people.  Neither Al Gore nor Barack Obama have made the case in ways that most Americans will understand.  I understand air and water pollution but I do not understand the need to control CO2.  Cap and trade?  I do not understand this idea at all.  I oppose things I do not understand.

Unless the president delivers some real accomplishments he will have a difficult time being re-elected in 2012.

Tiger Woods is a Synonym for Infidelity

Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant, Manny Ramírez, Magic Johnson, Barry Bonds, Mark Sanford, Bill Clinton, Hugh Grant

What do all of these famous people have in common?  The have failed to keep their faith with the world.  They believe they can behave any way they want and still live their lives as stars.

The latest excuse for Tiger Woods’ misbehavior is he has a “sex addiction.”  If this excuse is accepted by the general public it could also be used by rapists and sexual predators as a legal defense.

Whether its sex or drugs or an overwhelming desire to win, someone will attribute behavior as a medical condition.  Apparently that gives the perpetrator a free pass for his or her behavior.

Tiger Woods is already receiving his reward for bad behavior with the canceling of his many advertisements.  Unfortunately Manny Ramirez was applauded by fans when he returned to the Dodgers.

We need idols that really do have standards.

Some People Believe Money is Happiness

This reported on the BusinessWeek web site. “Kenneth Feinberg, the U.S. paymaster for rescued companies, will exempt some executives at American International Group Inc. (AIG) from a $500,000 salary cap after at least five employees threatened to quit because of the limits, people familiar with the matter said.”

“A person close to Feinberg said the exceptions allowing for salaries greater than $500,000 were unrelated to the five executives’ threats to leave.” In other words Mr. Feinberg is being forced to back down from his ruling.  There is no discussion of repaying the money all of us paid to prop up this “to big to fail” company.

There are no reports about this situation on any other web site.  More money for the wealthy?  Who cares?  Feinberg will remove the salary cap and hope that Barack Obama, Tiger Woods, climate change meetings, and Afghanistan will bury this situation on page 23.

The Huffington Post reports that “AIG was rescued with a bailout valued at $182.3 billion.  To date, the government has only received $19 million of the $45 million in retention payments AIG had pledged to repay.”

As I put all of this together there is only one conclusion that can be reached.  Money does buy happiness.  The wealthy never say “no” to the wealthy.  Americans have agreed to a society that rewards greed.  We got what we wanted.
