A Gun Crazy Society

59 people were killed by a madman who fired indiscriminately into a crowd all drawn together only by a love of country music.

This is not the first mass killing by a madman. It will not be the last. Sandy Hook (26 people killed), Umpqua Community College in Oregon (9 people killed), Virginia Tech (33 killed), Century 16 movie theater in Aurora, Colorado (12 people killed), and so many others.

All of this because of America’s love affair with guns.

Gun manufacturers and the NRA feel no guilt. The nonsensical commentaries by gun lovers bring no change to the never-ending treks to cemeteries.

Americas love for guns knows no bounds and no limits.

ANOTHER MASS SHOOTING

My solution to the issue of mass shootings is mass confiscation of guns. I know others will say that this could lead to a dictator but look at these facts. All of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and other nations have freedom of a democracy and no dictators. The death rate from use of guns in Canada is one-fifth that of the United States.

I really didn’t plan on writing today about this subject, but this one happened in my state. Yes another shooting with several left dead at a community college here in Oregon. All I could think of when I read about this, is that its just too close to home and when does it stop?

No other country has mass shootings like this, unless they are a third world country mired in hopeless conflict and wars. We are fast becoming a first world status with 3rd world conditions. Why?

Why do we continue to put up with this? When will it be okay finally to admit that it’s not alright for everyone to have guns. There must be some way to stop this senseless violence. What will it take? I am so tired of hearing that guns are our constitutional right and don’t take guns away from people. Guns kill- that’s…

Fire Arms Control

Rick Perry said in an interview Sunday, July 26, 2015, on CNN’s “State of the Union” that the shooting in Lafayette, Louisiana, earlier this week shows why gun-free zones are “a bad idea” and said he believes people should be able to take their firearms to the movies.

“I think that it makes a lot of sense to send a message across this country,” Perry said when asked by host Jake Tapper if the former governor believed a way to prevent such violence would be to allow moviegoers to take guns inside. “If we believe in the Second Amendment, and we believe in people’s right to protect themselves and defend themselves, and their families.”

In other words after you enter the theater and take your seat you should pull out a pistol and keep it on your lap just in case there is a gunman in the room.

On the same program Donald Trump said there was “a very fine line. You’ve got to do it very judiciously. If a person is mentally ill and it’s proven and it’s documented, you have to be extremely careful not to let them kill people,” he said.

“Frankly, he should be committed. Because he has the kind of a record where he should be in a institution. He was a very sick puppy.”

Mr. Trump has essentially taken my view. We test everyone before they receive a driver’s license. That should conducted for everyone who want to buy a gun. The test should confirm you know how to handle a weapon and should include a written test and a mental evaluation. Will this be expensive? More than the cost now but perhaps will save lives.

The NRA will throw a fit over this idea. Can our congress stand up to the NRA? I doubt it. But perhaps there is a chance. I continue to hope.

Democracy is on Decline in America

Rural America vs. Sensible Gun Control

Multiple opinion polls have shown that more than 80% of Americans support expanded background checks to make it more difficult for criminals and the mentally ill to obtain guns. Senators Joe Manchin (Democrat from West Virginia) and Pat Toomey (Republican from Pennsylvania) struck a bi-partisan deal to accomplish this objective.  The proposal failed 54 to 46.  You see passing anything in the Senate requires 60 votes of the 100 in that body.

It is accurate to say that those living in rural areas are more likely to need a weapon for protection.  Even those people in rural areas must worry about criminals and the mentally ill.  So why would they oppose an expansion of a regulation that already exists to gun shows?

The NRA and other pro-gun groups have won another round for no limits on gun ownership.  Democracy has lost.  This nation is less safe. This nation is less united.
