Interesting Story on Yom Kippur

On a Northwest Airways flight from Atlanta, GA., a middle-aged, well-to-do woman found herself sitting next to a man wearing a kippa. She called the attendant over to complain about her seating.

‘What seems to be the problem Madam?’ asked the attendant.

You’ve sat me next to a Jew!! I can’t possibly sit next to this disgusting person. Find me another seat!’

‘Please calm down Madam.’ the attendant replied. ‘The flight is very full today, but I’ll tell you what I’ll do. I’ll go and check to see if we have any seats available in club or first class.’

The woman shoots a snooty look at the snubbed Jewish man beside her (not to mention many of the surrounding passengers).

A few minutes later the attendant returned. The woman could not help but look at the people around her with a smug and self-satisfied grin.

The flight attendant then says…’Madam, unfortunately, as I suspected, economy is full. I’ve spoken to the cabin services director, and club is also full. However, we do have one seat in first class.’

Before the lady has a chance to respond, the attendant continues…’It is most extraordinary to make this kind of upgrade, however, and I had to get special permission from the captain. But, given the circumstances, the captain felt that it was outrageous that someone should be forced to sit next to such a person.’

The flight attendant turned to the Jewish man sitting next to her, and said: ‘So if you’d like to get your things, sir, I have your seat in first class ready for you…’

The lady says indignantly ‘I think that The Captain must have made some kind of mistake.’

To which the attendant replied,’ No M’am.

Captain Cohen never makes any mistakes.’

Money laundering to get your children into the most honored universities

What will it take to get my kids into UCLA, USC, Stanford, or another Ivy League university?  Do I have to bribe someone?

Can money buy anything you want even if it means you cheat?  Apparently for many wealthy people the answer is Yes!

Money laundering is the generic term used to describe the process by which criminals disguise the original ownership and control of the proceeds of criminal conduct by making such proceeds appear to have derived from a legitimate source. The processes by which criminally derived property may be laundered are extensive.

The parents, who were charged last month with conspiracy to commit fraud, were charged on Tuesday in a superseding indictment with conspiring to launder bribes and other payments through a charity run by Rick Singer, the mastermind of the scam, as well as by transferring money into the United States to promote the fraud, prosecutors said.

If Lori Loughlin and 15 other parents don’t plead guilty they could face some real prison time.  Did these people understand that their actions were at a minimum fraudulent? What did they think bribes given to a non-existent charity was if not an act of money laundering?

I would love to sit on the jury to hear their defense. That is not going to happen. It appears the case will be tried in Boston.

G.O.P. Wants to Control Women

Muslims are known for their mis-treatment of women.  They are treated as second class citizens.  If you have never seen the movie “Not Without My Daughter” you should watch it.  It tells of the treatment of women in a Muslim country.  Most of us in America are shocked by the depictions of life in Iran.  And yet, many Americans want to treat their wives and daughters as if they have no right to make decisions for themselves.

The orthodox of most religions in the United States still want to tell the women in their lives what to do and when to do it.  The men can have sex but the women can not.  If they get pregnant they must bare the child no matter how it was conceived.  Both Tod Akin, Republican candidate for the Senate in Missouri and Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock have taken the position that women have natural protection against rape or if they were rapped the child must be born.

Is this the view of the Republican Party?  Read their platform.  Buried in the writing are these gems that lead to the same conclusions as Akin and Mourdock have made.

This is enough for me to oppose Republicans for office.

  • Through Obamacare, the current Administration has promoted the notion of abortion as healthcare. We, however, affirm the dignity of women by protecting the sanctity of human life. Numerous studies have shown that abortion      endangers the health and well-being of women, and we stand firmly against it.
  • We  call on the government to permanently ban all federal funding and subsidies for abortion and healthcare plans that include abortion   coverage.
  • We likewise support the right of parents to consent to medical treatment for    their children, including mental health treatment, drug treatment, and    treatment involving pregnancy, contraceptives and abortion. We urge    enactment of pending legislation that would require parental consent to    transport girls across state lines for abortions.
  • We oppose school-based clinics that provide referrals, counseling, and      related services for abortion and contraception. We support keeping      federal funds from being used in mandatory or universal mental health,   psychiatric, or socio- emotional screening programs.

“60 Minutes” Interviews the Candidates for President

I saw the 60 Minutes presentation of interviews with President Obama and Mitt Romney.  They did not impart anything consequential.  Both men stated that their views on the direction America should take are significantly different.  They are correct.

The most informative comments were at the end of each interview.  Both were asked about their vision for the nation.  Their responses were similar but the words they used, I believe are telling.

Romney used one word, Freedom.  The opportunity to freely build the business you want.  The idea of drawing the world’s best and brightest to the USA for innovation of new things.

Obama said he saw his objective to provide all Americans the opportunity to succeed without regard for their race, religion, sexual orientation, or other differences.

I am troubled by the Romney comment about the 47% of the population that pay no income taxes. “I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”  I worked all my life and now I rely on Social Security and Medicare for the larger part of my income.  I am no bum and keep my home in excellent condition.  I pay my property taxes on time.  I resent his implications.  If you are part of the 47%, you should too!

You are the 47 Percent

By Joel Mathis in the Los Angeles Daily News, September 23, 2012

Are you married? Have a job? How about a kid or two? Did you get a tax refund last year because your status as a working parent made you eligible for an Earned Income Tax Credit?

Congratulations: Mitt Romney thinks you’re a welfare-addicted bum.

See, when Romney talks about that 47 percent of Americans who don’t pay income taxes, he’s talking about you.

You may not think that’s true, because of course you pay plenty of taxes – there’s the payroll tax that comes out of your check every week, the fee that goes to pay for Social Security. And of course, the world is a maze of taxes for you: Every time you fill up the gas tank or buy a birthday gift for the kid, the price is a little higher because of the extra few cents that goes to the state or local governments.

Surely Romney’s talking about somebody else?

Somebody who sits at home and waits for a government check they didn’t earn?

Nope. He’s talking about you.

See, to get to that 47 percent number, Romney has to include folks who actually work but didn’t officially pay income taxes because they didn’t earn enough, or because they qualified for the Earned Income Tax Credit.

Nearly two-thirds of Romney’s laggardly 47 percent paid payroll taxes.

And to state the obvious: You generally have to be on a payroll to pay the payroll taxes. You have to have a job.

Now: Romney obviously wasn’t taking you into account when he said that 47 percent is “dependent on government” and “entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it.”

Which is the problem: Romney wasn’t taking you into account. He and the rest of the Republican Party have been so solicitous of so-called ‘job creators” that they’ve treated job doers rather shabbily. It’s something to think about when you vote in November.

Facebook Folly

How many website do you subscribe to?

The say 800 million people have Facebook accounts. Those accounts are free. I am one of those subscribers and most likely so are you. I have never purchased anything as a result of having that account. I only go onto the account when I am bombarded by e-mail messages telling me that I have messages that require my response. Usually the messages are from people I do not know but want to be my friend. These are people who “maybe” did meet me somewhere but I can’t remember where and their faces are not familiar to me.

I must agree with Betty White when she presented her monologue on SNL. “I really have to thank Facebook … I didn’t know what Facebook was, and now that I do know what it is, I have to say, it sounds like a huge waste of time. I would never say the people on it are losers, but that’s only because I’m polite. People say ‘But Betty, Facebook is a great way to connect with old friends.’ Well at my age, if I wanna connect with old friends, I need a Ouija Board. Needless to say, we didn’t have Facebook when I was growing up. We had phonebook, but you wouldn’t waste an afternoon with it.”

Betty White Monologue

Apparently Mark Zuckerberg convinced himself and millions of others that his free social media site could be a marketing tool. Betty White is correct. He is trying to sell access to the telephone book.

Buy a share of Facebook? Why? How many people will reach their purchasing decision based upon the things they see on that site. Facebook’s number three advertiser, General Motors, has discontinued their advertising on the site.

Citigroup Stock Holders had Their Say

At Citigroup’s annual meeting, owners of the stock voted 55 to 45 against a $50 million executive pay package, including $15 million for CEO Vikram Pandit.

This is all thanks to the Dodd-Frank financial overhaul law.

Buried in its 2,300 pages is a requirement for public companies to hold “say on pay” votes for executive compensation.

Unfortunately the vote is non-binding (Democrats wanted it to be binding), but the chairman of Citigroup Dick Parsons said he took it seriously, and promised the board would consider it carefully.

Shareholders have every right to be upset with Vikram.

Over the last decade, Citigroup has had the worst stock price performance of the big banks, but consistently had some of the highest executive compensation.

Citi shares are down more than 80% since the financial crisis hit.
They’re down 93% from 2006.

Last year, Pandit got a $1.7 million salary, plus a $5.3 million cash bonus, and he got a $40 million retention package that pays out through 2015.

Getting a bonus should be a piece of cake for these execs, too, since the standard for the payout is an earnings track record half of what it was in 2009 and 2010 when the economy was in the tank.

Whoa! Don’t get too ambitious!

Look, to be fair to Pandit, for 2009 and 2010, he accepted just a buck in salary.

But to be fair to shareholders, Citi’s quarterly dividend is one penny.
Citigroup has announced its first-quarter profit had fallen two percent from a year earlier on a paltry one percent rise in revenue.

The Federal Reserve turned the company down on its request for a share buyback or dividend after Citi flunked the central bank’s stress test in March. And don’t forget the bank was one of many bailed out during the financial crisis.

Some people bridle at anyone earning millions of dollars a year. I am one of them.

If you can grow sales, boost the bottom line, raise the share price, then by all means you’ve earned a fat paycheck.

But what we can’t do is reward mediocrity and failure.

Last year shareholders voted down just two percent of executive pay plans. Maybe this is the start of a new trend.

Have you ever felt like doing this? I have.

You know how irritating mobile phone users are when they fail to exercise discretion and think the world needs to know their business? When you have enjoyed as much as you can stand you can now get you own back!!!
Enjoy!!!

After a busy day he settled down in his train from Waterloo for a nap as far as his destination at Winchester when the chap sitting near him hauled out his mobile and started up:- “Hi darling it’s Peter, I’m on the train – yes, I know it’s the 6.30 not the 4.30 but I had a long meeting – no, not with that floozie from the typing pool, with the boss – no darling you’re the only one in my life – yes, I’m sure, cross my heart” etc., etc. This was still going on at Wimbledon, when the young woman opposite, driven beyond endurance, yelled at the top of her voice,
“Hey, Peter, turn that bloody phone off and come back to bed!!”
