Abraham Lincoln and the Never Ending Civil War

Perhaps the title of this post should be “Is this the and of the United States?”

The American Civil War, also called War Between the States , fratricidal four-year war (1861–65) between the federal government of the United States and 11 Southern states that asserted their right to secede from the Union. The war ended 147 years ago.

After all of these years since the end of the Civil War the South is still re-fighting every battle and every event connected with the confederacy. Steven Spielberg’s new movie simply titled Lincoln says we have not gotten over the war or the events that led up to the war.

The new Steven Spielberg movie is based upon the book Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin. It’s an enthralling book. Even someone who is not particularly interested in reading history books will find this biography a compelling read.

The troubling part of this story is that citizens of all 50 states have submitted petitions to secede from the United States and that happened just this year. Seven southern state petitions have collected significant number of signatures. The leading is Texas with over 101,000. Major numbers of petition signers are residence of Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.

Happily Anti-Secession Petitions are Gaining Clicks, Too! The thought is that those wanting to secede should be stripped of their citizenship and deported. I would agree with that thought. Perhaps Mexico will take them.

  1. Awesome post as usual. It is rather comical that those that want to secede have no idea of all that would entail. I was exchanging comments back and forth with one of those from the southern states, and posted that if they were to secede that of course they would lose their american citizenship and would have to have a passport to cross over the border, and this ‘texas’ commenter said that was ok, because they would be free from the ‘tax sucking government;. I said fine, and wondered if he was also aware that all those that get SS and Medicare would no longer be eligible since they would now be foreign citizens. Never heard back from him after that. Its interesting to note that not one of the petitions had more than maybe 1% of the states people. I agree it would be nice to be able to say, hey, we see your signature and here is your ticket out of the country and stripped of your usa citizenship.

  2. On November 14, 2012, the L.A. Times confirmed that secession petitions had been filed with the White House from all 50 states. The move shows that while many in the nation are confident that President Obama will steer the country through the perilous times it is facing, there are millions more who fear the federal government is ready to crash and burn. Sparked by one lone petition to secede from the Union, the move has exploded stirring hundreds of thousands to add their names to their state’s petition on the “We the People” website. There is doubtful legal action that would result from the petitions, but the message has been heard loud and clear.
